Become A Member of Healing Rhythms For Veterans!

St. John's, Newfoundland-Labrador, Canada

Hello and Thank You for your interest in getting involved in our music program that has brought peace and joy to so many. We have different roles within our organization that need to be filled by dedicated volunteers.
You can join as an instructor, a student or as a general volunteer. Our main focus group is Military Veterans (Regular & Reserve; All Branches), First Responders (Fire, Police, EMT/Medical) and their families dealing with the daily ravages that come with mental wellness issues, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Depression, to name a few. These are considered "qualifying members". You have to be a qualifying member to have access to loaner instruments provided by us. "Non-qualifying members" need not despair - you can still participate in the program and take advantage of weekly instruction just like all of our members. All we ask is that you come with a love for good music and a desire to help our heroes in uniform in their time of need, in this case, through the filling of assorted volunteer roles/duties that may arise from time to time.

1. Leave ALL bias, prejudice, discrimination and judgement at the door. All our members have the right to be treated as equals by ALL members of our program. Veteran, First Responder or civilian - we are all in this together.

2. We enforce ZERO tolerance when it comes to harassment of any kind. Members that are proven to be harassing others will be permanently expelled from the program. Period.

3. We try our best to accommodate instruction with the knowledge that many of our students struggle to get out and are expected to "drop off the radar" from time to time. Do not let this program become a source of stress or pressure for you to come! In our experience, when members start feeling like they are burdened with the committment to attend every week, they may not come back at all. We want you to be happy when you are here and feel grateful that you got yourself out to a weekly session once again.

4. Be aware that your peers with you at a meeting may have mental wellness issues that could be triggered by graphic stories from your traumatic occupation. In this program we just say, "We understand. We get it." and focus on the music instead. No war stories. If you feel you want to talk about these things you will surely find others that will gladly go have a chat with you over a coffee.

5. We have members of all ages so please try to refrain from using vulgar or otherwise inappropriate behaviour (such as excessive swearing) while at the session.

6. Please notify the Program Director, Mike Hanlon or your instructor if you will not be attending a particular week or time period. It just makes it easier for us to guage how instruction will go on that night.

7. If you have loaner instruments we ask that you take the utmost care while they are in your possession. Ask your instructor about tips for storage and care.

8. HAVE FUN! It is seeing your smiles each week that drives us to continue and improve this music program.
